Tucked beside Hokowhitu Lagoon and just a short stroll from the city centre, Caccia Birch House is one of Palmerston North’s true gems. Set in almost three acres of beautiful, established gardens, this much-loved historic homestead (a Category One Heritage NZ site) has been part of our local story for over a century.
Whether you’re looking to soak up the scenery, learn more about the city’s past, or looking for a historic venue for your next event in Palmerston North, there’s something on offer at Caccia Birch.
A place for all
Palmerston North locals have used this special place for everything from weddings and birthdays to workshops and meetings.
By booking your event here, you’re also helping to keep the house and garden open, maintained and accessible for everyone.
Visiting the house
The house is open to the public Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm – unless there’s a private event on. If you’re stopping by, be sure to check out the Coach House to learn some local history and take a wander through the beautiful gardens.
Visiting the gardens
The gardens are open daily from dawn to dusk (except during private functions), and are the perfect spot for a picnic, a quiet stroll, or catching up with friends.
Dogs are welcome too – just keep them on a lead and remember to clean up after them.
Whether you’re after a bit of calm by the lagoon, a beautiful backdrop for family photos, or a space to enjoy a picnic lunch with loved ones, this is one of Palmy’s best-kept secrets.

There is plenty of on-site parking available – just follow the signs as you come off Te Awe Awe Street.
